What is Qigong?
Qigong is a powerful ancient Chinese practice that combines gentle movements, breathwork, and focused intention to cultivate and balance life force energy, known as "Qi."
Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Qigong has been practiced for thousands of years as a powerful tool for enhancing health, vitality, and inner harmony.
The Essence of Qigong
Qigong is built upon the understanding that energy flows through the body along pathways called meridians. When this energy is blocked or unbalanced, it can lead to illness, stress, and fatigue. Through mindful movements, controlled breathing, and meditation, Qigong helps to restore and optimise the natural flow of Qi, promoting overall well-being.
A Brief History of Qigong
Qigong is a profound and ancient system of healing and energy cultivation that traces its origins back over 4,000 years to early Chinese civilization.
Some of the earliest forms of Qigong were simple movements inspired by animals and the natural world. Ancient Chinese shamans and healers would observe the flow of water, the rising of the sun, and the graceful movement of animals to create flowing exercises that mimicked nature. These practices, known as Dao Yin, were intended to guide and stretch the body’s meridians and harmonise body, breath, and intention.
One of the earliest documented Qigong systems is the “Five Animal Frolics” (Wu Qin Xi) during the Eastern Han Dynasty (circa 200 CE). In this practice, movements were designed to embody the tiger, deer, bear, monkey, and bird—each linked to a different internal organ and energetic quality. Earlier still, in oracle bone inscriptions and ancient texts such as the I Ching references to breath control, movement, and energy alignment reveal that Qigong was being practiced in various forms long before it was formally named.
